Creative Fibre 2027 Diary and Calendar Photos

We invite submissions by Creative Fibre members of your fibrecraft photos for consideration to be included in the 2027 Creative Fibre diary and/or calendar.

Diary: Portrait style photos are preferred. Minimum size, approximately 2000×1200 pixels at 300dpi.

Calendar: landscape style photos are best but not essential but must be high resolution for good reproduction on A4 size. Minimum pixel dimensions approximately 3500×2600 at 300dpi.

Here are a few tips to help you take a great photo.

Framing Your Photo: Framing is setting the composition of the photo.

  • The less background, the better. Try different backgrounds until you find the right one – neutral is best (but not on the living room carpet). Buy a roll of white paper, or a large piece of white coreflute.
  • Get as close as you can to your subject.
  • As a guide, apply the two-thirds rule – place your subject in the left or right third of the image.
  • Arrange your work to accentuate the drape of the fabric.
  • For some photos you might want to add ‘props’, eg your hand woven hand towel could be wrapped around a basket of fresh scones, or your beautiful hand woven throw could be draped over a special chair.
  • Too much light (from a flash or direct sunlight) will wash out your photo.
  • Too little light and the photo will be flat and dark.
  • Photos taken in sunlight will have sharp shadows and bleached out areas.
  • Indoors: natural daylight or fluorescent lighting is good
  • Taking photos outside on an overcast day is a good option for even lighting and realistic colours
  • Ensure your photos are in focus – hold your camera or phone as still as you can for the sharpest image.
  • Take lots of shots to get the best possible image
  • Take your time
  • Discard the photos you don’t want after downloading (the beauty of digital photography)

The original image needs to be the best it can be. Even the power of Photoshop can’t fix the unfixable – glared out photos, photos out of focus. Enjoy!
