Máximo Laura Exhibition
Toi Gallery, Pataka Art + Museum, Porirua
Friday 21 July to Sunday 27 August 2017
Máximo Laura is an award-winning tapestry weaver who is internationally recognised as one of South America’s pre-eminent and most unique textile artists. In 2010 he was designated as one of Peru’s Living Treasures by UNESCO.
Máximo is a consultant, designer and lecturer on art and contemporary Andean textile design. His tapestries are the integration and synthesis of ancestral weaving techniques, symbols, memories, myths and rituals with contemporary art. They are exhibited internationally and his work is included in many private collections worldwide.
This exhibition is intended to foster an understanding and practice of Peruvian visual art and culture as well as an appreciation of tapestry weaving techniques. Máximo’s iconic works provide a visual feast of colour and composition that will attract interest and appreciation of visual artists and provide inspiration to all textile artists. Most of the tapestries will be for sale.
On Saturday 22 July Máximo will give an artist’s talk at 1pm and the official exhibition opening will be at 2pm.
